Special features & origin of name
The Stecknadelhorn has almost the same name as its neighbor, the needle horn. The assumption is obvious, as the external shape is very similar and the saying "looking for a needle in a haystack" can be derived from it. This would also reflect the inconspicuousness of the mountain.
Mountain and SAC huts nearby
The Mischabelhütte is located on a narrow rocky ridge between the Hohbalm and Fall glaciers at an altitude of 3,340 m asl, making it the third-highest SAC hut in Switzerland. The steep ascent (four hours from Saas-Fee, three hours from Hannigalp) is strenuous, but the reward at the top is more than worth it. The view into the distance and into the depths is breathtaking!
The Bordierhütte is an alpine refuge of the Geneva Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It is located above St. Niklaus. It is the central starting point to the peaks of the Balfring Group and the Nadelgrat.
The Stecknadelhorn lies between the Hohberg and Ried Glaciers. Ried Glacier is a valley glacier on the north flank of the Mischabel group. Hohberggletscher is located on the western flank of the Mischabel group. Hohberggletscher originates from the summit of Dom (4545 m asl) and covers the entire north-west flank of Dom.
